The most classic little black dress
July 6, 2010
The inimitable queen of cuts, Coco Chanel may have designed the Little Black Dress (LBD) way back in the 1920s and the petite Audrey Hepburn immortalised it on screen in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but what makes this ensemble a classic? Maybe its versatility is its USP, as you can jazz it up for an evening out or accessorise it with a jacket to make it perfect for day wear. Little wonder then that celebrities find it hard to give the LBD a miss despite claiming that they’d rather experiment with colours. Cheap Christian Louboutin Shoes
Says model Tinu Verghese, “I own a vintage Versace and it happens to be my only black dress. I’m not big on black, but this is one piece I simply could not resist. It is in a lovely stretch fabric and has a crinkly look that makes it versatile enough for me to adjust the length. Plus it reveals just the right amount of skin. I don’t even feel the need to accessorise it.” Cheap Tiffanys
Model Bhavna Sharma says her favourite LBD is one that was designed by the high priest of fashion, James Ferreira. “It has been put together in such a way that it almost looks like a drape. What I love about it is that I can go both formal or casual with it. I could either team it up with trousers or wear it as it is — with flip flops or high heels. It falls so beautifully and makes me feel ultra feminine,” she sayslink of london charm bracelets.
But what is it about this ubiquitous piece of clothing that makes it an eternal favourite with women? “An LBD tops the list of most essential fashion clothing. The fact that it has the most elegant silhoutte and it can never go out of fashion makes it an eternal classic. Besides, you can never go wrong with black,” says designer Mandira Wirk, adding, “It is not restrictive. You can experiment with the silhouette, True Religion pursesthe cut, the hemline and even the accessories. What’s more, it can make you look thinner. And if you’re worried about those wobbly knees or fat thighs all you have to do is team it up with a great pair of leggings or stockings for that extra bit of pizzazz.”
